The sapiential form of mortals does not really appear to originate from a thauma. What Aristotle alluded to – or what meaning Aristotle gave to the term – is inane research. Thales does not seem moved by thauma, but rather by a spirit of conquest of an unexplored territory. Not even the spirit of possession of Parmenides seems supported by a thauma, when he binds eon in the chains of logos. Not to mention the oracular spirit agitating Heraclitus. Or Xenophanes’ critical spirit.
Thauma is sudden unveiling, it is an awareness that blossoms unexpectedly. It is unlikely that it can sustain the effort of colonizing the Unknown. Not even in its most local and circumscribed form, curiosity, manages to hold up to the extent – the Totality – of the breath of wisdom.
Thauma is not a sufficient reason to support the sapiential autarchy of mortals, when the myth, the possession and the oracle made the wisdom of the Immortals available to mortals.
It is easier to assume that the sapientiality of mortals is the consequence of a rupture – perhaps not really of a rebellion, but, more simply, of the end of the dependency bounding mortals to the Immortals in archaic age. Indeed the sapientiality of the Immortals has never been generously offered to mortals: it was granted in response to requests, after complicated rituals or even after a non-trivial decoding of divine events.
The sapiential form inaugurated by Thales is a turning away from the Immortals. It was an act of impiety, even if discreet, silent, parallel, without violence against the Immortals. Prometheus was harshly condemned because he stole something from the Immortals. Mortals – perhaps mindful of their archaic dependence – do not intend to take anything away from the Immortals. They simply chose to start over. Maybe that’s why the Immortals let it go, despite themselves.
At a certain point in their history, mortals decided that the sapiential form of the Immortals was inadequate. Inadequate because it is suitable for the Immortals. Only for them. Mortals needed more and the Immortals couldn’t offer it.
Thales, a devotee of the god of Delphi, cannot be accused of hybris – the desire to equalize and then replace the god – this would be apostasis, revolt. Simply, he discovered the god’s sapiential inadequacy for what mortals expected – not from the god, but from the sapientiality the god had shown them.
Thales’ asebeia is in truth eusebes asebeia, devout impiety: it is simply the god’s marginalization from the sapiential horizon of mortals, marginalization and condemnation to sapiential irrelevance.
There was no acrimony between mortals and Immortals, when they left each others. It is the spontaneous end of a bond that resisted only in the presence of initial conditions which then failed, not because of anyone’s fault but because of an inexorable necessity. The Immortals were powerless in front of the end of this age, because the mortals had no fault. The way of mortals is not the way of Immortals. For this reason Thales does not demolish temples, on the contrary he placed his words on the pediment of the god’s temple, as the last act of pietas, of worship before definitive valediction – it is remarkable that no word of the god has ever been placed on the pediment of his temple: maybe the god never said anything really memorable. Does anyone remember unforgettable words of Apollo? Or of Dionysus? Or of Zeus?
The indisputable fact is that, from a certain point onwards, the way of mortals and the way of the Immortals began to diverge and diverged irrevocably. Because the Immortals cannot offer mortals what they most radically need. The decline of the gods is a consequence of their inadequacy, not of the impiety of men.
