65. Genealogia dell’eziologia – Genealogy of Aetiology

The sapientiality of the brotoi originates from that of the Athanatoi, or more precisely, from what the brotoi know about the sapiential form of the athanatoi.
1. The primary and original form of the sapientiality of the immortals is genealogy. Unlike the catalog, genealogy is a principle of order and therefore a true sapiential form, which goes beyond mere acknowledgment.
As much as Aristotle strives to obscure Hesiod and myth, his aitia appears to be nothing more than a demythologized evolution of the genealogy around which the Theogonia revolves. Both are typically Hellenic topoi of coming-from, that is not merely omne quod movetur ab alio movetur, but more generally omne quod est ab alio est, that is, the declaration of the self-insufficiency of what is within our reach.
2. Sapiential language reflects dependency with blinding clarity: genealogy originates (comes-from) genos, and gene are for Plato the five fundamentals to which what exists is traced back. And since Platonic ontology follows an ascending pattern—the higher the level of generality, the greater the ontological richness—the traceability (in an ascending sense) mirrors derivation (in a descending sense). The megista gene in Plato’s language are also the protai aitiai in Aristotle’s terminology. The what-it-is of a thing is its cause, and the cause is its coming-from, that is, the other from which it originates. Pure genealogy.
3. Ultimately, beneath aetiology lies genealogy. The arché is also the eidos. The culmination of Hellenic sapientiality, Neoplatonism, would be the tale of an immense genealogy through which Plotinus envisions explaining the what-it-is of the things. Procession is the demythologized name of genealogy. Whether the what-it-is is the from-where-it-comes of a thing has never truly been argued, and Hellenic wisdom is simply the unfolding, in all possible shades, of this uncritically assumed identity.
4. The only case in which the from-where-it-comes of a thing is entirely irrelevant and inconsequential can be found in Euclid’s Elements. However, these were never considered relevant for a sapiential perspective until the dawn of Modernity. In the Euclidean context, everything—points, lines, planes, spaces, figures—is contemporaneous (and this is the sole reason to hypothesize the possibility of Platonism in mathematics). What is relevant is the relationship and the possibility of relating the stoicheia—pure, contemporaneous relations, co-eternal, permanent, and constitutive of the related elements. This means that the effective and final demythologization of the Western sapiential paradigm required twenty centuries.
