66. Definizioni costruttive – Building Definitions
___
It was the definition – the spearhead and heart of a more general perspective hinged on univocity – that extinguished Sophistry and the definitive sophistical refutations are those of Aristotle and not the Platonic dialogy written with the more or less explicit purpose – the dialectic fights on equal terms, but does not disarm the enemy.
1. And yet the definition is also said in many ways. Aristotle does not seem to have noticed it, just as he does not seem to have noticed the radical ontological difference between naturalia and artificialia, since his works overflow with artificialia brought to confirm his ontological theses of general value.
There are definitions that define the perimeter. There are others that penetrate. There are still others that instead construct. Up to a certain point in our history of the sapiential form of the mortals, we have deluded ourselves that defining the perimeter was necessarily the same as penetrating inside the defined thing. The tacit assumption was that in defining we place ourselves within the perimeter and everything included in the perimeter is immediately accessible.
2. Then we realized that in tracing the defining perimeters, we remain outside the perimeter. And that the perimeters can only be traced from the outside so as not to remain closed within them and that, at the same time, a perimeter, to truly be a perimeter, cannot allow interruptions along the enclosure. So, for us, delimiting means remaining outside, making inaccessible to us what we delimit. Defining simply means separating from the rest, identifying and denoting in an unequivocal form. Thus, we were pushed to a further option: definition as construction of what is defined. Building does not require penetrating and does not expose one to the risk of remaining outside. The perimeter is traced by building.
3. The price to pay for a definition as a construction is that the defined will always be an artifact, not a spontaneous consequence of what one would like to define, but a clear and distinct, coherent and complete artificial structure, totally manipulable. It is the logischer Aufbau der Welt. Which is not the logical construction (or reconstruction) of the world, but the Welt als logischer Aufbau. The question what relationship our logical construction has with the things since the hypothesis that we narrate the things as things spontaneously offered themselves has dissolved, is a labyrinth, a swamp in which one can only get lost. More prudent is not to take for granted one form, one generally valid model according to which that relationship is structured. Even more prudent would be to imagine a single story specific and different from all others for each construction that our logischer Aufbau connects in its Welt.
4. Ultimately, how relevant is the procedure by which one constructs, since what is relevant is instead the need to have to do with constructions and not with things? That the construction is the result of a single and unrepeatable story, does not make it less construction and therefore does not make it less suitable for the logischer Aufbau der Welt. On the other hand, it is highly likely that the being-told of a thing is more faithful to the thing than a procedure can be – regarding which the same problem should be posed, that is, how it can be legitimized.
The implication, perhaps unpleasant but inevitable, is that every logischer Aufbau precisely in its being a construction necessarily delvers itself to Technics, or rather to Mechanics (lato sensu) since logic has always been the more or less successful mechanization of discourse. It brings us to the conclusion that the world in which we exist is the Great Machine of Everything, the Total Machine already glimpsed by Descartes.
