Potrebbe indurle all’indignazione e all’organizzazione di manifestazioni antifasciste o antiomofobe.

“Anything but gauche caviar!”, said Elly Schlein, the new Secretary of Partito Democratico. “Those who say we are radical chic, those of the Limited Traffic Area, have not seen the numbers of our primaries” (La Repubblica, 1 March 2023).
Caviar would be the well-known sturgeon roe and the denomination gauche caviar is  the French version of the radical chic Left. Caviar however – and at this point champagne too – seems even more suitable.
Short explanation.
Given that there were 4,300,000 voters in 2005, 3,100,000 in 2015, 1,850,000 in 2017, 1,600,000 in 2019 and there were 1,098,000 in 2023, the left would seem to be truly well under way  for an elitist and exclusive Partito Democratico. A designer-party – so, really not only cavier but also champagne. Unless the newly elected Secretary has serious problems with mathematical competence, especially with regressive numerical series.
Conchita De Gregorio who, as usual, understood everything about how these things go, commented (on March 5) that the Right, after the victory of Elly Schlein, looks trembling at the magnificent and progressive fortunes of the Italian Left. Power of exclusive designer clothes. For reasons that only De Gregorio fails even to suspect, Meloni is still libating copiously to Jupiter Feretrius on the Campidoglio Hill.
But let’s go back to the caviar&champagne radical chic-ism of the Left. For once, let’s skip the caricatural figures that populate also this political, for trying to get an idea of what is behind it. Since that only specific ideas generate specific political caricatures, because the opposite is highly unlikely (that political caricatures generate ideas of any kind), we will omit the communist Fausto Bertinotti and his cashmere sweaters and the post-communist Massimo D’Alema and his offshore sailing ships, for some annotations on ideas capable to generate political caricatures.
Let’s take the strongest point of the new Secretary: the elimination of inequalities.
It means, translated into current language, a more equitable distribution of wealth.
Translating into even more current language, it would mean taking away from those who have to give to those who don’t have.
Translating into the language of the volunteer cooks at the feasts of the Communist Party, it means that private property is theft.
Now, let’s go from the idea to the political program, which would be the answer to the question: how to better distribute wealth?
The Left, the real one, the Left of political battles, the Left-Left in short, floods the talk-shows with its recipes, but since the time of Palmiro Togliatti the Left has never supposed that how to create the wealth to be distributed was a problem.
Actually, before Togliatti, when the Left-think undertook to solve it, kolkhozes, state industry and the Five-Year Plans had been born. How much wealth they distributed in the endless queues in front of empty shops, in the most radiant capitals of real and egalitarian socialism, is history.
Overwhelmed by an uncontrollable attack of common sense, Stefano Bonaccini the looser, commenting on the first programmatic point of his winning opponent, quotes Romano Prodi, who recalled that “to redistribute wealth, there must always be someone who creates wealth, one must also think of how to make wealth”.
An incomprehensible question for Roberto Speranza and Nicola Fratojanni, since the wealth of a Nation grows on trees. The possibility that wealth could come from market competition, from the effort for technological innovation, from continuous investments, is only the sinister tale of wild liberalism.
So, better not to disturb Elly Schlein and Concita De Gregorio’s happy days. It could lead them to be indignant and arrange the umpteenth anti-fascist or anti-homophobic show.
This is the caviar&champagne Left. There is no other Left. Because when Left tries to be less radical-chic, people like Matteo Renzi arrive and people like Pier Luigi Bersanis leave.
