25. Radical-comics
Storia già vista non so quante volte.

Zerocalcare (https://www.zerocalcare.net/) deserts the Lucca Comics & Games Festival because it is sponsored by the State of Israel (La Repubblica, Sunday 29 October). Nothing dramatic for the universe, which will survive anyway, but for me, an old lover of the ninth art (comics, in fact), an opportunity for some reflection. Especially on the militant intellectuality.
So, Zerocalcare skips the comics festival of Lucca. The first that comes to me is that the ayatollahs of Tehran and the ineffable Erdogan, who dreams of reviving the Ottoman Empire, would have done the same.
Controlled and Guaranteed Origin Denomination Left obviously applauds him, because as usual it is hostage to its vaudeville ideology and its absolute lack of a sense of the ridiculous. But so be it – tantum religio potuit suadere malorum said that subversive Titus Lucretius.
The reasons for the great rejection and applause? Reasons would actually be a strong word, but it seems that in those parts of politics the most preferred position, equidistantism between the wrong and the right as indispensable premise for justifying the wrong, is very radical-chic. Story already seen it I don’t know how many times…
As far as I’m concerned, if I were forced to choose whether to live in Tehran or Tel Aviv, I would certainly not be equidistant. Tehran, obviously, should be the most suitable place for those who protest, demonstrate, testify, etc. etc. against Israel. With the loving care of the ayatollahs, they should be fine.
I have loved comics since I had shorts and by studying comics I learned to draw. However, of my idols of the time – like Giovanni Ticci and John Buscema first and foremost – I remember the tables, not the political ideas. I learned ethics and politics from others, such as Locke, Tocqueville, Popper, Aron, von Hayek…
Having never felt the need for a militant art just as I have never felt the need for a militant cuisine, I limit myself to evaluate how well a designer can draw, not what messages he wants to transmit. Just take a look at some tables by Giovanni Ticci and Zerocalcare for understanding who draws and who messages. The medium is the message, said McLuhan, failing however to highlight that the more one dedicates himself to the medium the less he can dedicate himself to the message. And that, as an obvious consequence, the more you dedicate yourself to the message, the less you can dedicate yourself to the medium. In short, either you draw well or you embrace Hamas’s reasons.
For militant intellectuals the message matters, obviously. To the point that even the Nobel of Literature, recently awarded to carnival actors and song writers, has taken it as an award criterion, finally offering equal rights even to those who cannot write. And probably, in the light of what happened in Lucca, in Stockholm we they could begin to consider comics as the new horizon of world literature. Then even influencers and bloggers will be able to assert their right to no longer be the pariahs of the literary world. After all, in a world in which the number of followers decides the Good and the Beauty, the things can only go only in this way. The problem is that quantity and quality are usually inversely proportional. And that Zerocalcare, as the admiring columnist of La Repubblica specifies, has one and a half million followers.
