38. Metafisica della molla. Divertissement ontomeccanico – Metaphysics of the spring. Onto-mechanical divertissement

(Jules Verne, Mastro Zacharius, Capitolo V)

The spring is not included in the list of simple machines – lever, wheel axle, inclined plane, screw, wedge. Although totally artificial – and therefore clear, distinct, definitive – the spring is ultimately elusive. Mechanically elusive. Elasticity – like magnetic attraction – cannot be totally reduced to mechanics. And like magnetism, it possesses an ontological suggestion ignored even by the greatest theorist of ontological magnetism – i.e. Aristotle with his theory of moving ends: first, the property to let elastic thing go back to being what it was, after every deforming solicitation, secondly, its ability to communicate motion during the return to being what it was,.
It is impossible not to see what possibilities could be opened up by the prospect of a possible flexibilitas entis, elasticity of Being, the Being that spontaneously returns to being what it was after a de-formation, after the loss of its form, as iron spontaneously moves by attraction towards the stone of Magnesia. But unlike the magnet – which Aristotle takes as the physical model of his metaphysics – the spring, by reacquiring its initial form, communicates motion. Reacquiring form implies generating movement, that is, motion as a consequence of reacquiring form. The ontological implications could lead to disconcerting results.
It would have been suggestive, and perhaps even practicable, to imagine more fully a heavenly machine built around elastic causality rather than final causality. Modernity, in rejecting the Aristotelian design of the ontological magnetism of the final cause, imagined its machine of the heavens built around the principle of the pendulum clock, that is, counterweights acting by fall, that is by gravity – an absolute Up and an absolute Down are always inexorably Aristotelian, even in their relativity. More innovative would have been to build the heavens machine around the principle of the pocket watch, whose dynamic heart is a winded-up spring that move il sole e l’altre stelle, tending spontaneously to return to its original condition, originally extended. God who, in addition to being a Watchmaker, on each apocatastasis would not have had to lift up weights, but recharge a spring. Elasticity of form instead of gravity of matter.
But perhaps the impossibility of being able to reduce elasticity to mechanics is the dark side of the spring – incompatible with Cartesian clarity, distinction and definitiveness. The dark side of the spring is the demonic side of Modernity, understandably avoided as long as possible.
“The old clock burst with the crash of lightning; the spring shot out and leapt across the room with a thousand fantastic contortions. The old man ran after her, trying in vain to catch her and shouting: my soul! My soul!”
(Jules Verne, Master Zacharius, Chapter V)
