53. Elogium mechanicae

1. La physis avanza nel tempo per selezione, per tentativi ed errori, per catastrofi.
Propriamente, non evolve: semplicemente allinea una sequenza infinita di sopravvissuti alle circostanze del momento. Il prezzo che la physis chiede ai physika perche ad essi sia consentito di esistere è immenso e cioè confronto incessante di tutto con tutto  ed equilibrio sempre precario e provvisorio.
La mechané procede invece per combinazioni, concatenazioni, implicazioni reciproche. Chiama in causa tutta e sola la componentistica necessaria e non c’ né ridondanza né instabilità.
La meccanica é la quiete della ripetitività dell’identico che non permette l’inatteso – quiete dopo ma anche durante la tempesta (della physis), anzi quiete invece della tempesta. Il suo fascino cattura inevitabilmente quando l’opaca indifferenza della physis che non ha zone franche non è più contenibile dal semplice dire-raccontare le cose e si mostra come condizione spontanea e inesorabile dell’esistere dei physika: provvisorietà che fiorisce sopra l’annientamento della provvisorietà che era fiorita in precedenza – ciò che si chiama vita più di ogni altra forma, vita che vive del venir meno della vita.
2. Indubbiamente la gamma di possibilità offerta dall’organico è inimmaginabile dal meccanico, che dal punto di vista dell’organico è rigida stabilità e quiete cimiteriale di una ripetitività sempre identica a se medesima. La vita ha possibilità infinite perché sorge come adattabilità alle circostanze nel tempo e poiché non c’è limite alla combinazione di circostanze, infinita è la gamma di possibilità dell’organico. Il meccanico per darsi necessita invece dell’annullamento dell’infinità del possibile e il conseguente restringimento dell’orizzonte – più propriamente, la definizione di un orizzonte là dove prima non c’era né era sensato che ci fosse. In un contesto di infinità di possibilità, nessuna stabilità è possibile e così l’organico, dal punto di vista del meccanico, è precarietà e provvisorietà strutturali di precari e provvisori in incessante interazione – caos brulicante. È il paradosso dell’organico: provvisori e precari ordinati e cioè instabilità ordinata come se l’ordine non potesse che essere instabile. Ordine – cioè stabilità precaria e provvisoria – al livello del singolo organismo e instabilità strutturale al livello della totalità organica – brulicare adattivo mai a se medesimo identico, caos senza fine.
Immaginare di ricondurre la totalità organica entro un orizzonte definito – cioè privarla del contesto della sua presumibile infinità di possibilità – sarebbe ricondurre l’organico al meccanico.
3. Se ricondurre l’organico entro un orizzonte definito significa meccanizzarlo, come guardare al costante, esponenziale complessificarsi del meccanico se non come una tendenza a includere possibilità sempre ulteriori? Come una tendenza a superare ogni possibile orizzonte definito e quindi, in definitiva, ad adeguare – ogni volta finitamente ma su un percorso che non parrebbe avere un limite strutturale – l’infinità delle possibilità dell’organico? Il nodo si sposta, in questa prospettiva, dal tema dell’organico-meccanico al tema della complessità. Se la complessità è graduale avvicinamento al caos man mano che l’unità iniziale si articola, l’opposizione organico-meccanico, dal punto di vista della complessità, sarebbe allora una differenziazione di livello di complessità e l’organico sarebbe – in continuità con il meccanico – un livello di complessità oltre una certa soglia-limite, superato il quale il meccanico tende a riproporre, e in misura sempre maggiore, la caoticità dell’organico, cioè l’apertura  a possibilità sempre maggiori, in avvicinamento sempre asintotico all’infinito – all’apertura infinita – che è il contrassegno strutturale dell’organico. Ma Se c’è continuità fra meccanico e organico, l’organico non potrà mai essere davvero infinito, dal momento che non c’è continuità fra finito e infinito.

     1. Physis advances in time by selection, by trial and error, by catastrophes.
Actually, it does not evolve: it simply aligns an infinite sequence of survivors to the circumstances of the moment. The price that physis asks to physika in order to allow them to exist is immense, that is, incessant comparison of everything with everything and an equilibrium that is always precarious and provisional.
Mechané instead proceeds by combinations, concatenations, reciprocal implications. It calls into play all and only the necessary components and there is neither redundancy nor instability.
Mechanics is the quiet of the repetitiveness of the identical that does not allow the unexpected – quietness after but also during the storm (of physis), or rather quietness instead of the storm. Its charm inevitably captures when the opaque indifference of physis that has no free zones is no longer containable by the simple saying-telling the things and shows itself as a spontaneous and inexorable condition of the existence of physika: temporariness that flourishes above the annihilation of the temporariness that had flourished previously – this is properly called life more than any other form, life that lives on ending life.
2. Undoubtedly the range of possibilities offered by the Organic is unimaginable by the Mechanical, which from the point of view of the Organic is rigid stability and cemetery quiet of a repetitiveness always identical to itself. Life has infinite possibilities because it arises as adaptability to circumstances in time and since there is no limit to the combination of circumstances – the range of possibilities of the Organic is infinite. The Mechanical requires instead the cancellation of the infinity of the possible and the consequent narrowing of the horizon – more precisely, the definition of a horizon where before there was no horizon and to have a horizon was not interesting. In a context of infinity of possibilities, no stability is possible and so the Organic, from the point of view of the Mechanical, is precariousness and structural temporariness of precarious and provisional in incessant interaction – endless chaos. It is the paradox of the Organic: ordered provisionality and precariousness, that is ordered instability, as if order could not but be unstable. Order – that is precarious and provisional stability – at the level of the single organism and structural instability at the level of the organic totality – adaptive swarming never identical to itself, endless chaos.
To imagine bringing the Organic totality back within a defined horizon – that is to deprive it of the context of its presumable infinity of possibilities – would be to bring the Organic back to the Mechanical.
3. If bringing the organic back within a defined horizon means mechanizing it, how can we look at the constant, exponential complexity of the Mechanical if not as a tendency to include ever further possibilities? As a tendency to overcome every possible defined horizon and therefore, ultimately, to adapt – each time finitely but along a path that does not appear to have a structural limit – the infinity of the possibilities of the Organic? The crux shifts, in this perspective, from the theme of the Organic-Mechanical to the theme of complexity. If complexity is a gradual approach to chaos as the initial unity is articulated, the Organic-Mechanical opposition, from the point of view of complexity, would then be a differentiation of level of complexity and the Organic would be – in continuity with the Mechanical – a level of complexity beyond a certain threshold-limit, beyond which the Mechanical tends to re-propose, and to an ever greater extent, the chaotic nature of the Organic, that is, the openness to ever greater possibilities, in an ever asymptotic approach to infinity – to infinite openness – which is the structural hallmark of the Organic. But if there is continuity between the Mechanical and the Organic, the Organic can never be truly infinite, since there is no continuity between the finite and the infinite.
