Thus we reach Plato, who definitively codifies the hypothesis of intellectum without intelligens, which intellectum, in full Parmenidean orthodoxy, is the same as esse, even though it reverses the hierarchical order: intellecta (eidos) are not perfect mirrors of entia, but entia are the imperfect mirror of intellecta.
Intellecta exist absolute, without an act that places them. After all, if they exist eternally, they have nothing that can precede them. In Platonic perspective there is no intelligens or even no intelligere, because the actor is missing. One might wonder at this point, whether intellecta, are really intellecta, or simply things that are mirrored in other things, by methexis, by parousia, by mimesis, which do not necessarily imply that the participated, the witnessed, the mimed, is an intellectum. Plato actually maintains the identity between intellecta and immaterialia, but this coextension inevitably leads to make the first of the two terms redundant if an intelligens is not given. After all, if it makes no sense to speak of an immaterializans – an agent who places immaterialia – we do not see any need for an intelligens – an agent who places intellecta.
The precondition for the emergence of the intelligens – that is, of the intellectus – is that the intellecta are not ungenerated. As long as they are assumed to be ungenerated, there is no need for an agent to place them. The slave of the Meno does not rediscover himself as intelligens – that is, one who places, one who acts the geometrical intellecta – he is simply introduced to a thingality of a higher order, in the great forest of the intellecta instead of in the great forest of the entia.
Greek wisdom does not recognize the intelligens as such, that is, as the ultimate origin of intellecta. Psychè is many things – daimon and eidos-morphé, mostly – but it is always said in the third person.
It is necessary to wait for the Pauline teaching for discovering the first person, who thus becomes the true hypokeimenon, the true sub-jectum, that is, what underlies everything. Paul, but above all Augustine who with the Confessiones will definitively consecrate the irreversible centrality of speaking in the first person. Thus the intelligens definitively arises, as agens intellecta because it is the bearer of intellectus. However, there is a more structural and ontological necessity which imposes the emergence of the sub-jectum, namely the need to find a place for God – the agnostos theos and the subjectum omnium – in the Platonic ontology which is reborn in the neo-Platonic emanationist perspectives of late Roman times. The Plotinian One is that from which the eidos emanate in the second hypostasis. But they necessarily emanate, as things from thing.
