Physis is the things that offer in their unappealable, irresistible, immediate brutality.
Logos is our appealable, flexible, variously mediated, to say the things and their offering to us.
Physis proceeds by discontinuous catastrophes with every possible size and depth.
Logos proceeds by continuous accumulation and oblivion at variable speeds.
Physis is incessantly replacing .
Logos is tenacious to hold back.
Physis is radical, incessant discontinuity under a mask of apparent continuity.
Logos is desperate, tenacious continuity under a mask of apparent discontinuity.
Physis consigns the things to a condition of inexorable temporariness.
Logos delivers words to a condition of separateness that let them persist – the word is the only hope of the thing. And for Plato, it is also the truth of the thing.
But the real distinctive feature between the kata physin and the kata logon is irreversibility. The kata physin is irreversible, the kata logon is always reversible. What happens kata physin – that is, the things – is always irreversible. What happens kata logon – that is, the words – is always reversible.
The dream of the kata logon – that is, of the wisdom of mortals – is to confer the reversibility of the words to the things and, faced with the failure of this immeasurable opus magnum, to replace things with words in the end. The sapientiality of mortals has always been and is, at its root, an unrelenting combat against the irreversibility of the kata physin.
The kata logon is therefore in a radical opposition to the physin kata.
We are what we have become because we are kata physeos, that is against nature, and there cannot be a kata logon that is also kata physin. So there can’t be a kata physin that is also kata logon, unless you replace things with words.
There is an irreconcilability between words and things and what we are has bloomed on this irreconcilability. And we are sons of this original fracture, of this original detachment from the background of the kata physin.
As long as we maintain the opposition, we will be what we are.
The contemporary obsession of being kata physin is the memory (cyclical and recurring) that things, after all, cannot be replaced by words. But at the same time, it is a (permanent) memory that our vocation is not to resign ourselves to things.
