13. Il bigino di Forrest Gump – The cliff notes of Forrest Gump

In modo asfissiante e opprimente.
Confondere l’insegnamento o appiattirlo sull’indottrinamento è fascista. Certifico senza esitazioni. Il fascismo è metodo. Senza ombra di dubbio.
Ed è anche abitudine mentale. Anche qui posso fare appello all’esperienza personale. Né i picchettanti né i deridenti erano probabilmente cattivi.

Chiara Valerio (La Repubblica, The obligation to support the anti-fascist school, 24 February 2023), proudly offers her contribution to cosmic anti-fascism, commenting on the avoidable letter from Minister Valditara to the principal Annalisa Savino. The fact is known and in itself would have been immediately forgotten if the Minister hadn’t put something of himself into this matter.
As it often happens, what happens is of little interest whereas, what is said about it is much more interesting. The article definitely is much more interesting. Not because it adds something new to the cliff notes of militant anti-fascism rehashes, but because it represents an exemplary case of left-wing populism – exemplary because it is exposed and of a whiteness from others times and therefore a bit imprudent.
Let’s read.  “Fascism is a method. Fascism, which we have only summarily tried, is a mental attitude. Taunting is fascist. Threatening is fascist. Confusing teaching or flattening it on indoctrination is fascist. As Forrest Gump would have said “Fascist is who the fascist does”, even when he says he is something else”.
Just a couple of remarks. The author, born in 1978, is too young to have attended the lessons of Anti-Fascism, Restistentialism, Collectivism, Assemblyism, Proletarianism, Sickle-Hammerism, Maoism, Castroism, Stalinism, Third-Worldism, Trade-Unionism, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc., which, in the fabulous 1970s, were taught in schools of all levels by a widespread network of organic teachers. It wasn’t indoctrination, it was education of the masses. Between one strike and another, between one school self-management and another. Daily, systematically, tirelessly, with Bella Ciao as the soundtrack.
I survived that treatment of cultural lobotomy only because I was a son of the Lumpenproletariat at the lowest level of the metalworking social ladder. And as a survivor, I can testify that fascism has been tried painstakingly, punctiliously, thoroughly, in extreme detail. In a suffocating and oppressive way.
Confusing teaching or flattening it on indoctrination is fascist: I can certify without hesitation. Fascism is method. Without a doubt.
And it is also a mental habit. Here, too, I can appeal to personal experience. In the years when algebra was supposed to be at the service of the class struggle, I remember the picket lines at the entrances of schools and factories under the inquisitive gazes of the guardians of revolution sent to align the proletarian flock. And I remember the derision of the dissenters, especially in the collective rituals of the forced-participation assemblies. Neither the pickets nor the mockers were probably bad. They had been bred in such a way – that was all. Believing to know where the world should go and feeling to be entitled to bring it there, by hook or by crook, is the mental habit of political enthusiasm of every color.
Inexorably true the judgement of Forrest Gump: it is not what you say that qualifies what you do, but it is what you do that qualifies what you say. The political color is irrelevant.
Finally, we arrive to populism.
The average militant, post-fascist or post-communist, cannot be expected to minutely examine the ninety-eight pages of tables of the State financial statement or to be aware of the legal implications of the separation of the careers of magistrates. So he needs someone who avoids him this inconvenience, serving him something more immediate and effective. This is what politics is for: God, Country and Family, for the post-fascists; private property as a theft, merit as fault, fascism (here it is!) always lurking, for the post-communists.
Putin is at war against Ukraine telling his people that he is defending Holy Mother Russia from a new attack by Western European Nazi-fascism. And his people seem to believe it. Which leads us directly to the first of the two coordinates of populism: the keywords capable of triggering the conditioned reflex – and Chiara Valerio’s piece is perfect small handbook of Anti-Fascistism in the great handbook of left-wing populism.
The second coordinate is the total unawareness of the populist to be a populist – of which the article above is a perfect micro-masterpiece, contrite and indignant. But this is how the moral superiority of the left-wing  works.
