38. Il Soggetto sottinteso – The Understood Subject (3/3)
(Fine)
For Hellenic wisdom, noein – intelligere – is possession of noemata – intellecta – and intellecta, on the one hand, have existed unconditionally ever since Parmenides established the postulate that noein and einai are the same. On the other hand, they have an irresistible attraction to the onta in which they conditionally manifest themselves out of their original context. Parmenides looked suspiciously at the prospect of parallel planes – the noein of noemata and the einai of onta – and established the uniqueness of the plane. Plato, in affirming the perspective of a wisdomness that was wisdomness of things and against the perspective of the intellectual thing which is the Parmenides sphere, took care not to go overboard on the opposite side, assigning the domain of the theion to his eidos.
We are the epiphany of intelligere as intelligens acting intellecta. Arguably, we are unnecessary epiphanies, not only in the sense of provisional, but in the more radical sense of accidental, occasional. The ego of Descartes does not exist – the res cogitans of which it is possible to say in the third person because it is res and necessary premise, as cogitans, of the intellecta. Descartes’ ego is functional and necessary and his cogito is valid first of all and above all (indeed, only) for God.
Marked by chance, we Westerners are not res cogitantes – God, at most is the Only Possible Res Cogitans. We are the ego codified by Paul and Augustine, the ego as fault of existing, at most simia Dei in the sense of the Tempter, because we wish to be, with Descartes, res cogitantes aping the Only Possible. Paul and Augustine indissolubly linked the ego – it is the oldest legacy of Western culture, already codified by Anaximander – to fault, our being intelligentes to sin. If we were not sinners, we would not act intellecta and therefore we would not be, because our esse is intelligere, according to Parmenides’ postulate. It is not by chance that the unio mystica is the dissolution of our autonomous ability to act intellecta and our liquefaction as entia in the great sea of being.
Since what acts intellecta is missing, Parmenides speaks of the noein in terms of einai and reaches the sphairos, the on, the first among the onta, indeed and only one. He does not speak of einai in terms of noein. Plato will do it and at the price of dissolving the unity-uniqueness of the Parmenides einai.
In the absence of what acts intellecta because intellecta are without the need for something that acts them, it is pleonastic to take care of the intelligere. By Parmenides’ postulate, it is enough to say about the onta to also say about the noemata. Noein is reduced to noemata without the need for an upokeimenon, a subjectum that acts them.
The problem is that Parmenides’ postulate holds as long as the Unique is assumed, the uniqueness of the einai in which ens coincides with esse and intellectum with intelligere. In this context assuming a subjectum is unnecessary. After all, the Arab-scholastic question of the unity of the agent intellect or even of the possible intellect, as well as of any form of occasionalism, finds its ultimate meaning here: that is the aporias that are generated when the unity-uniqueness of the einai-noein collapses. The Unique cannot have origin and beginning. But not the Many. Both as onta and as noemata. To suppose an origin for the noemata means to suppose something acting them, a subjectum, an intelligens. As long as it was possible, the Oneness of the One was preserved, that is, the coincidence between ens and esse and between intellecutum and intelligere is preserved. When Uniqueness collapses definitively, Descartes arrives, Modernity arises. With the cogito we begin to have to say also the intelligere, no longer just the esse. We will end up saying only the intelligere, making the esse an epiphany of the intelligere. If for Parmenides the word is a thing, from Descartes onwards, the thing becomes a word. With Hegel the thing will become a story. That is History. And like any story, the story of a protagonist – the Geist, the agens intellecta. The new Unique, the new God. The subject is no longer understood. The Absolute Subject.
