51. Mechanica entis (2/4)

Raggiunto un certo livello critico di articolazione, complessità e integrazione, il meccanismo supera l’originaria ancillarità computazionale (anche estrema, anche iperpotenziata) nei confronti di chi lo ha posto in essere e diventa automathon, cioè causa sui, il meccanismo agente in proprio. Mentre nella fase precedente era agente a richiesta e a comando, il salto di complessità lo definisce come agente autonomo. Prima o poi accade. Deve accadere. La complessità non può complessificarsi all’infinito senza un salto di livello. Senza un salto di livello collassa e si frantuma.
Ma se la tendenza della complessità a complessificarsi fa parte della definizione di complessità – ed è ragionevole ipotizzarlo – anche nel nuovo livello la complessità, complessificatasi fino a un certo punto critico, dovrà compiere un salto per non collassare: il meccanismo ipercomplesso che può costruire a sua volta meccanismi.
Prima o poi sarà necessario appurare le implicazioni del duplice asse evolutivo della complessità – quello orizzontale, quello dell’espansione complanare fino a un punto critico nel quale avviene il salto di livello, l’asse verticale, dove si ripeterà l’espansività fino a un punto critico che renderà necessario un nuovo salto.
Se il salto implica la finitudine del processo espansivo (asse orizzontale), si può dire lo stesso del numero di salti (asse verticale)? Detto in breve: esiste un principio di limitazione della complessità?
Nell’attesa, sarà necessario riconoscere che la meccanica è riproducibilità illimitata perché non si intravedono ostacoli alla reiterazione illimitata di una o più funzioni sempre identiche. Se è così, non esisteranno limitazioni in linea di principio né all’articolazione, complessità e integrazione del meccanismo costruente, né all’articolazione, complessità e integrazione del meccanismo costruito. Né alla riproducibilità del format meccanismo-che-costruisce-meccanismi.
Prima o poi è inevitabile che accada l’oblio delle origini non meccaniche del meccanismo e il meccanismo allora potrà porre se medesimo etsi homo non sit. Questo è il compimento dell’intelligenza artificiale, cioè dell’artefatto capace di costruire artefatti adeguati a una funzione precedentemente definita – dal logistikon all’automaton al poietikon: la capacità computatoria esponenzialmente raffinata e ampliata è la premessa necessaria allo scoccare del causa sui. Così si meccanizza anche la definizione di finalità funzionali in vista delle quali il meccanico costruisce il meccanica, realizzando compiutamente e definitivamente la causa mechanica sui.
È così che il Meccanico emula l’Organico e lo sopravanza: l’Organico si amplia per generazioni successive e per infinitesime varianti in capo ciascuna a una individuità – l’Organico non progetta se medesimo. Il Meccanico non conosce questo limite.
Il punto è la complessità critica del meccanico, il livello di complessità capace di innescare i salti di livello di complessità necessari alla totale autonomia del Meccanico. Da lì in avanti, il Meccanico può procedere senza l’Organico – l’intelligenza artificiale senza più l’intelligenza naturale, cioè l’intelligenza slegata dalla sua premessa organica: l’intelligenza non si estingue, ma si riposiziona e riparte – salta di livello.

After reaching a certain critical level of articulation, complexity and integration, the mechanism overcomes the original computational ancillarity (even extreme, even hyper-enhanced) towards those who put it in place and becomes automathon, i.e. causa sui, the mechanism acting on its own. While in the previous phase the mechanism was an agent on request and on command, the leap in complexity defines it as an autonomous agent. Sooner or later it happens. It must happen. Complexity cannot become infinitely complex without leaps in levels. Without level leaps it collapses and shatters.
But if the tendency of complexity to complexify itself belongs to the definition of complexity – as it is reasonable to hypothesize – even  in the new level the complexity, after complexyfying itself up to a certain critical point, will have to make a leap in order not to collapse: the hypercomplex mechanism that can build in turn mechanisms.
Sooner or later, it will be necessary to ascertain the implications of the dual evolutionary axis of complexity – the horizontal one: the coplanar expansion up to a critical point in which the leap in level occurs;  the vertical one: where the expansiveness will be repeated up to a critical point that will make a new leap necessary. If the leap implies the finitude of the expansive process (horizontal axis), can the same be said of the number of leaps (vertical axis)? In short: is there a limitation principle in complexity?
In the meantime, it will be necessary to recognize that mechanics is unlimited reproducibility because there are no obstacles in sight to the unlimited reiteration of one or more always identical functions. If this is the case, there will be no limitations in principle either to the articulation, complexity and integration of the builder mechanism, nor to the articulation, complexity and integration of the built mechanism. Nor to the reproducibility of the mechanism-that-builds-mechanisms format.
Sooner or later it is inevitable that the non-mechanical origins of the mechanism will be forgotten and the mechanism will then be able to pose itself as something etsi homo non sit. This is the fulfillment of artificial intelligence, that is, of the artefact capable of constructing artefacts suited to a previously defined function – from logistikon to automaton to poietikon: the exponentially refined and expanded computational capacity is the necessary premise for the triggering of the causa sui. So the definition of functional purposes in view of which mechanic constructs mechanics is mechanised, fully and definitively realizing the causa mechanica sui.
This is how the Mechanical emulates the Organic and surpasses it: the Organic expands through successive generations and through infinitesimal variations, each belonging to an individuality – the Organic does not design itself. The Mechanical does not know this limit.
The point is the critical complexity of the mechanic, the level of complexity capable of triggering the leaps in level of complexity requested for the Mechanical’s total autonomy. Since then, the Mechanical can proceed without the Organic – artificial intelligence without natural intelligence, that is, intelligence disconnected from its organic premise: intelligence does not become extinct, but repositions itself and starts again – it leaps over to a new level.
