Who knows whether, even for hyper-complex structures, Aristotle and his perspective might ultimately be right — that is: the final cause that dictates the form. A hyper-complex structure is the result neither of mere aggregation nor, on the other end, of a preordained plan.
1. From the perspective of a functioning structure — thus, neither a simple architectural design, which can indeed become hyper-complex through successive additions, nor a preordained mechanism, perhaps as the endless repetition of the same fractal structure — what matters is the uniqueness of the output.
The uniqueness of the output grants unity — and structural unity — even to hyper-complex systems, and as long as this uniqueness can assert its necessity and indispensability, it will guide the process of structural complexification while preserving its structural coherence.
Whether the unity of the structure is the legacy of an original simplicity lost through successive complexifications, or whether it emerges when those additions surpass a certain threshold, is a different matter.
What remains is that the uniqueness of the output, regardless of its origin, acts as a formal cause precisely because it is a final cause — a sort of feedback mechanism, perfectly consistent with what has been established about complexity, which shapes what comes before in light of what follows.
Uniqueness of output does not mean an always identical result, but that more than one output at a time is not possible. A functioning structure is inevitably sequential.
And it goes without saying that the more complex the structure, the more accentuated the unifying role of output uniqueness must be — or else the complexity will dissolve as a unitary structure.
The output may be articulated or extremely intricate, even self-contradictory, but it will still be the sole result of the structure’s functionality.
2. Complexity, in order to be complexity, must be defined around a unifying node, whatever it may be: the uniqueness of the output.
It is not defined by the multiplicity of units — or nodes — interacting (in any form or degree), nor by the multiplicity of inputs the complexity processes.
There may be a definable limit to the degree of complexity a given structure can sustain but determining it in advance may not be possible — until the limit is exceeded and, a posteriori, the beginning of complexity’s dissolution reveals where its structural threshold lays.
In naturalibus, higher-order complexities are those that have progressively structured themselves around output uniqueness — self-awareness might be the peak, the breaking point of the level of complexity we can sustain — and conversely, this suggests that output uniqueness is an effective response to the ceaseless multiplicity of solicitations that complexity must endure.
Effective response means stabilizing — that is, the capacity to maintain complexity at least at the already reached level. Even more so if it enables further complexification — that is, the addition of new nodes to the net or the increase in node density in any part of the network.
3. The final cause that gives form to complexity thus acts as the vis unitiva of multiplicity—of both nodes and relations. The final cause, here, in its extreme flexibility, preserves its unifying capacity: as if the complexification of complexity could occur only through permitted nodes and relations—that is, such as do not compromise the uniqueness of the output.
Is there a limit beyond which no new nodes or relations compatible with the integrity of the complexity (i.e., with the maintenance of output uniqueness) can exist? Or are complexities indefinitely complexifiable, with final causality so endlessly flexible as to indefinitely allow the integration of nodes and relations?
If the vis unitiva intensifies with each increment of complexity, the question should be reformulated: how fully can unity be one?
