Ars imitatio naturae. At first it was a Platonic thesis to banish techné to the limits of the politeia, and then an Aristotelian thesis to demonstrate the continuity of all levels within the great sea of being. At that time, techné included together sculpture, mechanics and oratory without dramatic distinctions. Probably for no other reason than that mechanics – and everything that we now gather under the name of technology – was so in its infancy that it was considered little more than a playful exercise. Modernity has begun to separate what God had united and Contemporaneity has completed the project. Art – as we understand it – has been consumed in the contestation of tradition, which tradition, for one hundred and fifty years now (that is, at least starting from impressionism) has been made up of contestations to tradition, reducing itself to local fair installationism. Technology, on the other hand, has spread correspondingly, i.e. without limits and without being able to glimpse them yet.
Ars and natura. Techné and physis, therefore.
The relevant question is the same as always: what exactly do the Parthenon or an F18-Hornet fighter-bomber imitate in nature? What exactly do the imperial crown of Austria and first-order predicative calculus imitate of nature?
Pertinent questions that could also be translated into questions such as: how natural is a wheel, which does not seem to have a corresponding term to imitate in rerum natura? And is there a natural reason why nature, in the time and with the imaginable efforts it has taken to assemble the neuronal structure of a brain, has not perfected a single screw?
Technology, in general, is never kata physin. Nor is it para physin, despite the fact that the ecological Luddism of the present global age, which would like us all to be good savages à la Rousseau, seems to demonstrate the opposite.
If anything, technology is parallel reconstruction of nature through components designed for ever greater efficiency and effectiveness of processes, whatever they may be – where greater effectiveness means effort for the necessary achievement of the purpose at each single repetition of the process and greater efficiency means effort for effectiveness with increasingly simplified processes.
Reconstructing in parallel does not necessarily mean imitation. An amygdala is undoubtedly the imitation of the predator’s claw. The spear on which a tip is fixed is already a minor imitation. Even less a bow that shoots an arrow and even less a crossbow that shoots a quarrel. How much then an AK-47 or an ARX-160 caliber 5.56 are still an imitation of the claw of the predator, is a question that perhaps does not even deserve to be asked.
The crux is the parallel reconstruction: the parallel reconstruction is the result of a manipulation of components and the interesting side is that the same components lend themselves to as many manipulations as possible. It means that the parallel reconstruction does not have one and only one configuration needed. It means, in the alternative, that the components make possible the ever more accentuated distance of the reconstruction from what it was supposed to be a reconstruction of.
