55. La prima legge di Argante – The First Law of Argante
2. In effetti, non è affatto andata così. L’essenza è stata tentata come pure ipotesi sono state proposte.
___
What is gravity if not a virtus gravitativa or adtractiva which, like the virtus dormitiva of opium, is nothing but a name given to an occurrence – a denomination therefore and not a reason – after all, how can we fail to notice that, from a purely philological point of view, force is one of the possible translations of virtus.
1. Gravity is the name we give to an event in which a mass of smaller size moves spontaneously towards a mass of (much) greater size with a speed which, measured, turns out to be in inverse ratio to their squared reciprocal distance.
. m1 m2 F r2 F r2 F r2
The formula F = G ———– is exactly the same as the formulas m1= ———– , m2 = ———– e G = ———– .
. r2 G m2 G m1 m2 m1
But it does not define at all either F, or G, or m1, or m2, or r. We know no more about the virtus adtractiva of bodies than we know about the virtus dormitiva of opium. Moreover, if in physics, as Bridgman opined, it is the formulas that define, the circularity of definitions is the norm even though in the presence of circular definitions, nothing is properly defined. Moreover, just as in physics the Galilean non tentar l’essenza is in force, so is the Newtonian hypotheses non fingere also in force. Therefore circularity is not at all a contraindication.
2. However, things turned out differently. The essence was attempted and as hypotheses were proposed. The narrative section of physics at every level tells of how gravity deforms space or how high speeds contract space and time. It is the same as conferring essence to space-time and gravitation by making hypotheses on the basis of the dynamism fixed by the formulas. This is how F, G, m1, m2, r and all the other quantities of physics have been widely reified and how they became the things that populate our world just as acts and potencies, matters and forms, substances and accidents populated the late medieval world.
After all, what is the answer to the most Newtonian of questions, that is, why does the apple fall to the ground? Formulas are of no help. So either we demonstrate the senselessness of the question (it has been done, thus demonstrating once again that no question is stupid but the answers can be very stupid) or we resign ourselves to answering that the apple falls because of the virtus adtractiva of the earth. Just as the virtus dormitiva of opium is the cause of the sleep of those who take it.
3. Finally, the difference between virtus adtractiva and virtus dormitiva is that no one, at the time, took the trouble to investigate whether in the virtus dormitiva one could detect inverse or direct proportionalities or constants or other algebraic combinations between terms in which the consumption of opiates could be reconstructed. For example, how could one fail to notice the direct proportionality between duration of sleep and concentration and quantity of opium taken? And the inverse proportionality between the duration and the physical resistance of the person taking it (resistance which in turn is easily measurable with precise quantitative parameters)?
. q c
If so, we would have arrived at a formula like the following one: S = ——– k ,
. R
where the duration of sleep S is directly proportional to the quantity q and concentration c of opium and inversely proportional to the resistance of the subject R, with k as a numerical constant of proportionality to be acquired experimentally.
But just as this (or any other) formula relating to the virtus dormitiva does not make it clearer, the same happens with the formula of the inverse square (or any other formula) of the Newtonian physics. But this is why it is inevitable tentar l’essenza and hypotheses fingere.
