58. Il fabbro contemplativo – The Contemplative Blacksmith
Artefacta aliis tradere.
_____
Artefacta aliis tradere. Poiein belongs to the Occident perhaps more than noein. At the beginning, Parmenides’ postulate – to gar autò noein estin te kai einai – does not include poiein, probably because poiein was of pertinence of technai – productive manual skills that were not and could not be a sapiential form capable of competing with that of the god.
1. Twenty centuries later, we will codify the postulate of modernity in the form to gar autò poiein estin te kai einai, assuming as our own the sapiential form of the deformed divine outcast – Hephaestus – the disavowed progeny of Hera and Zeus but always consulted when needed. We will not wait twenty centuries to begin to glimpse that noein is a form of poiein. Admitting it will require much more time, much more awareness and much more hybris. How much naturafactum is Parmenides’ eon? Or the homoioméreiai of Anaxagoras? Or the Aristotelian syllogism?
The cardinal postulate of Modernity establishes itself by simple substitution of equivalents, after twenty centuries of slow, inexorable corrosion of the superficial layer of the noein that reveals, ever less unrecognizable, its unscratchable heart of poiein. But then the disturbing and shocking conclusion becomes inevitable – and perhaps for this reason deferred until it was possible – more syllogistico by which einai poiein estin, the same is Being and Making. Being definitively and consciously becomes construction. Logical construction, evidently, but the téchnai of poiein do not necessarily require the things. Logischer Aufbau des Seins. And if Being is what is made, then what is made is Being. Consequently, what is not made is not and cannot be.
2. Being is therefore an artifact, the first (or last), the supreme (or extreme) of artifacts. Before and outside the Occident, there is no Being. There are the things, in their brutal, irremediable, extremely precarious singularity. And major and minor gods who play with the things. As founding, initial and initiating artifact of the Occident, Being is the artifact that – as first-last, supreme-extreme – has placed Totality in the manufacturing hands – in the téchne – of the Occident, constituting itself as guarantor and guarantor of both the Occident and Totality. The contemplative illusion marks the first season of the sapiential history of the Occident, the Hellenic season. The contemplata – aliis tradenda, Aquinas will say a thousand years later – were what was supposed to reveal themselves spontaneously and originaryly. On this, deluding himself that he could effectively mimic the sapientiality of the god without paying the price, the wisdom of mortals had bet. Considering the spontaneous and originary revelation of the things to be constitutive and structural, for twenty centuries the sapientiality of mortals could not simply acknowledge that the contemplata were ultimately artefacta. The obvious remark that we constitutively and originaryly deal with the things, not with anything else, made the illusion more plausible. It took twenty centuries to become aware that for us – brotoi today as then, as always – the horizon of the things is not the sapiential horizon – is not our sapiential horizon.
3. With disturbing evidence, it is then necessary to admit that the contemplator is poietic and technical like the mechanic, ultimately homo faber that one as this one, both exercising a téchne structured in defined and coherent forms. Thus the itineriarium in Deum codified by Bonaventure is a fabrica, an artifact that lines up countless artifacts in a sequential combination capable of taking us out of the sapiential horizon – hoping to found God there. Mybe Philo in his opificium mundi was foreshadowing the conclusion so brutally drawn by Modernity: Totality is the artifact of artifacts, radically, suggestively, irremediably unnatural.
But this is ultimately the Occident. This is the heart of the Occident. Sapientiality of mortals consciously constructed because irreversibly embraced, sapientiality of mortals not because found and collected by mortals, but because fabricated and assembled by mortals.
The occidentaization of the world ultimately tells us how greatly overflowing the power of sapientiality claimed by mortals has been in Hellenic lands. And even if the Occident now seems to be in decline, occidentalization is not reversible. Which should raise some non-trivial questions about the reason why the things went the way they went.
